National Guard
Domestic reserve force
The National Guard is a reserve military force in the United States, organized by state but subject to federal activation.
Guard units respond to domestic emergencies—hurricanes, riots, floods—and can be deployed overseas during wartime.
The governor called up the National Guard after the earthquake.
Members are sometimes called guardsmen or simply the Guard. (Lowercase national guard refers to such forces generically.)
