Sandinista

Ortega's political movement

A Sandinista is a member or supporter of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional, the leftist revolutionary movement that overthrew Nicaragua's Somoza dictatorship in 1979 and governed until 1990.

The name honors Augusto César Sandino, who led guerrilla resistance against U.S. occupation in the 1930s.

The term appears in political discussions of Central American history and U.S. foreign policy: Reagan backed the Contras against the Sandinistas.
