crypto-Jews
Secret Jewish practitioners
Crypto-Jews are people who practice Judaism secretly while publicly professing another religion, historically to avoid persecution.
The term most often refers to Iberian Jews who converted to Christianity during the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions but maintained Jewish practices in private.
Their descendants, sometimes called *conversos* or *marranos*, preserved traditions for centuries: Some families in New Mexico discovered they were crypto-Jews when they recognized their grandmother's Friday night candle-lighting as Sabbath observance.
