Russian Jews
Pale of Settlement
Russian Jews are Jews from Russia or the former Soviet Union, or their descendants.
The term encompasses a diverse population with a distinct cultural heritage shaped by centuries of life in the Russian Empire and Soviet period—including experiences of pogroms, the Pale of Settlement, and state antisemitism.
Many emigrated in waves to Israel, the United States, and elsewhere: My grandparents were Russian Jews who came through Ellis Island.
The community produced influential figures in literature, music, science, and politics.
