PIN number

Cash machine secret

PIN number is a redundant phrase—the N in PIN stands for "number," so PIN number literally means "personal identification number number." Despite this, the phrase is extremely common in everyday speech and writing: I forgot my PIN number.

Linguistic purists object, but the redundancy persists because PIN alone can sound incomplete, and most speakers neither know nor care about the acronym's expansion.
