public key

Shared cryptographic credential

A public key is a cryptographic code that can be shared openly, used to encrypt messages or verify digital signatures.

It works in tandem with a private key: data encrypted with a public key can only be decrypted by the corresponding private key, and vice versa.

This asymmetric system underlies secure internet transactions, encrypted email, and cryptocurrency wallets.

You'll need my public key to send me an encrypted message.
