hashing

Converting to digests

Hashing is the process of converting data into a fixed-length code using a mathematical function.

In computing, hashing transforms passwords, files, or other inputs into unique strings called hashes: The system uses hashing to verify file integrity.

The same input always produces the same hash, but the process can't be reversed to recover the original.

Hashing also means chopping food into small pieces, as with hash browns.
