Oscar Hammerstein II

Oscar Hammerstein II was an American lyricist and librettist who transformed the Broadway musical in the mid-twentieth century.

His collaborations with composer Richard Rodgers produced *Oklahoma!*, *Carousel*, *South Pacific*, *The King and I*, and *The Sound of Music*—works that integrated song, character, and story in ways that defined the modern musical.

Earlier he partnered with Jerome Kern on *Show Boat*.

His lyrics favor plain language and emotional directness: Oh, what a beautiful mornin', Some enchanted evening.
