book musical
Staged singing narrative
A book musical is a musical theater work with a substantial plot and developed characters, as opposed to revues or jukebox musicals built around existing songs.
The "book" is the spoken dialogue and story structure connecting the musical numbers.
Most classic Broadway shows—Oklahoma! , West Side Story, Hamilton—are book musicals, where songs emerge organically from the narrative rather than being strung together for entertainment alone.
