Middlemarch

English town novel

Middlemarch is a novel by George Eliot, published in 1871–72, widely considered one of the greatest works of English fiction.

Set in a provincial English town, it weaves together multiple storylines examining marriage, idealism, politics, and social change.

The title has become shorthand for the ambitious, psychologically rich Victorian novel: It's her Middlemarch—the book she'd been building toward her whole career.
