Pemberley
Fictional aristocratic mansion
Pemberley is the fictional grand estate of Mr.
Darcy in Jane Austen's *Pride and Prejudice* (1813).
The name has become shorthand for aristocratic English country houses and the wealth and taste they represent.
Elizabeth Bennet's visit to Pemberley marks a turning point in her perception of Darcy: She had never seen a place for which nature had done more, or where natural beauty had been so little counteracted by an awkward taste.
