Wuthering Heights
Yorkshire gothic novel
Wuthering Heights is an 1847 novel by Emily Brontë, her only novel, depicting the passionate and destructive love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw on the Yorkshire moors.
The title refers to the windswept farmhouse where much of the story unfolds—"wuthering" being a Yorkshire dialect word for turbulent, stormy weather.
The novel's intensity and unconventional structure initially puzzled critics but established it as a landmark of English literature.
It's giving Wuthering Heights suggests something dramatically emotional or romantically tormented.
