Middle Earth

Shire's larger setting

Middle Earth is the fictional continent where most of J.R.R.

Tolkien's fantasy narratives unfold, including *The Hobbit* and *The Lord of the Rings*.

The term draws from Old English *middangeard*, the realm of humans between heaven and hell.

Tolkien's Middle Earth is inhabited by hobbits, elves, dwarves, and men, and has become the template for much of modern fantasy worldbuilding.

Sometimes spelled Middle-earth.
