Balrog
Flame and shadow
A Balrog is a demon of shadow and flame in J.R.R.
Tolkien's Middle-earth mythology—ancient spirits corrupted into monstrous form, wreathed in fire and darkness, wielding whips of flame.
The most famous appears in *The Fellowship of the Ring*, where Gandalf confronts one on the bridge of Khazad-dûm: You shall not pass!
In fantasy gaming and fiction, balrog has become a generic term for powerful fire demons.
