MPEG
Digital video format
MPEG is a set of standards for compressing digital audio and video, developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group.
The formats allow large media files to be reduced for storage and streaming while preserving quality.
MPEG-1 enabled Video CDs and the MP3 audio format; MPEG-2 became standard for DVDs and broadcast television; MPEG-4 dominates internet video.
Files often carry extensions like .mpg or .mpeg.
