Levi Strauss
Blue jeans inventor
Levi Strauss was a German-American businessman who founded the company that bears his name and pioneered the blue jean.
After immigrating to the United States in the 1850s, he established a dry goods business in San Francisco during the Gold Rush era.
With tailor Jacob Davis, he patented the process of using copper rivets to strengthen work pants, creating what became known as Levi's jeans.
The company Levi Strauss & Co. remains one of the world's largest apparel companies.
