Walter Benjamin

Walter Benjamin was a German Jewish philosopher and cultural critic whose work on art, media, and modernity became influential decades after his death.

His 1936 essay "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" introduced concepts like the aura of original artworks—their unique presence diminished by mass reproduction.

Benjamin fled Nazi Germany but died by suicide in 1940 while attempting to escape through Spain.

His fragmentary, aphoristic style and unfinished Arcades Project on nineteenth-century Paris made him a touchstone for later theorists of culture, technology, and capitalism.
