indigo dye
Blue textile pigment
Indigo dye is a deep blue coloring agent traditionally extracted from plants of the genus Indigofera, now mostly synthesized.
For centuries it colored textiles worldwide—most notably denim, which owes its characteristic blue to indigo.
The dye bonds poorly to fabric, which is why jeans fade with washing and wear: That vintage indigo dye has faded beautifully.
