Adriatic Sea

Mediterranean's northeastern arm

The Adriatic Sea is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea separating the Italian Peninsula from the Balkans.

It extends roughly 500 miles northward from the Strait of Otranto to the Gulf of Venice, bordered by Italy on the west and Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania on the east.

The sea has been a vital shipping route since ancient times and remains important for trade, fishing, and tourism along its coasts.
