Saint Catherine
Alexandria's tortured virgin
Saint Catherine refers to several Christian saints, most notably Catherine of Alexandria, a 4th-century martyr said to have been tortured on a spiked wheel—hence the Catherine wheel, a type of firework that spins while burning.
Catherine of Siena, a 14th-century mystic and Doctor of the Church, is another prominent bearer.
The name appears in numerous place names: Saint Catherine's Monastery in Sinai.
