IUD
Long-term birth control
An IUD is a small contraceptive device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.
The two main types are hormonal IUDs, which release progestin, and copper IUDs, which work without hormones.
IUDs are among the most effective reversible birth control methods, lasting anywhere from three to twelve years depending on the type: She got an IUD after her second child.
The procedure to insert or remove one is quick but can be uncomfortable.
