IBM PCs

Big Blue desktops

IBM PCs were personal computers manufactured by IBM beginning in 1981, establishing the hardware architecture that came to dominate desktop computing.

The open design allowed other manufacturers to create compatible machines, spawning the "IBM PC compatible" standard.

Though IBM eventually exited the PC market, the architecture persists—modern Windows computers are descendants of the original IBM PC design.
