CONFIG.SYS
Startup settings file
CONFIG.SYS was a system configuration file in MS-DOS and early Windows operating systems.
It loaded device drivers and set system parameters at startup—memory management, disk buffers, and hardware settings.
Users edited it with a text editor to customize their system: I had to add a line to CONFIG.SYS to get the sound card working.
Largely obsolete since Windows 95.
