device drivers
Hardware-software translation layer
Device drivers are software programs that allow an operating system to communicate with hardware components.
Each piece of hardware—printers, graphics cards, keyboards—needs its own driver to translate between the device's specific commands and the operating system's standard instructions.
When hardware malfunctions, updating or reinstalling drivers is often the first troubleshooting step: The new graphics card won't work until you install the device drivers.
