Hz

Wave rate unit

Hz is the abbreviation for hertz, the unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second.

It measures how often something repeats—sound waves, electromagnetic signals, processor speeds: The human ear detects frequencies from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

Kilohertz (kHz), megahertz (MHz), and gigahertz (GHz) denote thousands, millions, and billions of cycles per second.
