Mrs

Bride's new honorific

Mrs is a title for a married woman, placed before her surname or full name: Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Patricia Williams.

Traditionally it indicated a woman had taken her husband's name, but usage has loosened.

The title derives from mistress but lost that pronunciation centuries ago; it's now spoken as "missus." In American English, Mrs. takes a period; British English omits it.
