Hollywood blacklist
McCarthy-era film purge
The Hollywood blacklist was a mid-twentieth-century practice of denying employment to entertainment industry professionals suspected of communist ties or sympathies.
Following congressional hearings in the late 1940s, studios refused to hire accused writers, directors, and actors—some for decades.
The term now applies broadly to any informal industry ban: After the scandal, he was essentially on a Hollywood blacklist.
