friendly witness
Helpful trial speaker
A friendly witness is someone called to testify who is expected to support the side that called them, as opposed to a hostile witness who may be uncooperative or adverse.
In legal proceedings, attorneys have more latitude in questioning hostile witnesses than friendly ones.
The term extends beyond courtrooms: The committee called several friendly witnesses to bolster their case.
