studio system
Hollywood's golden control
The studio system was the dominant mode of American filmmaking from the 1920s through the 1950s, when major studios controlled every aspect of production—owning soundstages, employing actors and directors under exclusive contracts, and operating their own theater chains.
The system produced films efficiently but constrained creative freedom.
Antitrust rulings dismantled it, leading to the independent production model that followed.
