Red Scare

Postwar ideological panic

The Red Scare refers to two periods of anticommunist hysteria in the United States.

The first followed World War I and the Russian Revolution (1917–1920), targeting suspected radicals and immigrants.

The second, in the late 1940s and 1950s, became associated with Senator Joseph McCarthy's investigations and Hollywood blacklists: Her grandfather lost his teaching job during the Red Scare. (Lowercase red scare describes any such panic.)
