Wahhabi
Strict Islamic movement
Wahhabi refers to a follower of Wahhabism, a conservative Sunni Islamic movement founded by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab in 18th-century Arabia.
The term describes adherents who advocate strict interpretation of Islamic texts and rejection of practices they consider innovations or idolatry.
Wahhabism became the dominant religious force in Saudi Arabia and is often associated with puritanical religious enforcement: Wahhabi clerics condemned the practice as un-Islamic.
The label is sometimes applied pejoratively by critics to various Salafi or fundamentalist movements.
