Gitmo
Caribbean detention facility
Gitmo is informal shorthand for Guantánamo Bay, the U.S. naval base in Cuba that since 2002 has housed a detention facility for terrorism suspects.
The name evokes controversy over indefinite detention and interrogation practices: The detainees have been held at Gitmo for over a decade without trial.
