Fitzroy

Melbourne inner suburb

Fitzroy is a surname historically given to illegitimate children of English royalty—literally "son of the king" (from French *fils du roi*).

Several dukes and nobles bore the name.

Today it appears as both surname and given name, and as a place name across former British territories: the Fitzroy River in Australia, Fitzroy neighborhoods in Melbourne and London.

The Fitzroys were prominent in Victorian politics.
