Falstaff

Portly comic knight

Falstaff is a fat, witty, cowardly knight in Shakespeare's *Henry IV* plays and *The Merry Wives of Windsor*—a comic figure of appetites and self-serving bluster.

The name has become shorthand for a jovial, dissolute companion: He was the Falstaff of our college years, always ready with a joke and a drink.
