European integration
Cross-border political fusion
European integration is the process by which European nations have pooled sovereignty and coordinated policies, primarily through the European Union and its predecessors.
It encompasses economic union (the single market, the euro), political cooperation, and the free movement of people and goods across borders.
The project began after World War II as an effort to prevent future conflicts through economic interdependence: European integration has deepened over decades.
Critics argue it erodes national sovereignty; proponents see it as essential for peace and prosperity on the continent.
