Dreyfus affair
Antisemitic military scandal
The Dreyfus affair was a political scandal in France (1894–1906) in which Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish army officer, was falsely convicted of treason.
His eventual exoneration exposed antisemitism and military corruption, deeply dividing French society.
The case became a landmark in debates over justice, nationalism, and civil liberties: The Dreyfus affair made Zola famous for his open letter "J'accuse".
