Vichy France
Pétain's puppet state
Vichy France was the French government that collaborated with Nazi Germany after France's defeat in 1940, named for the spa town where it was headquartered.
Marshal Philippe Pétain led the regime until liberation in 1944.
The term now evokes collaboration with an occupying enemy: The opposition accused the puppet government of creating a new Vichy France.
