general staff
Army command group
The general staff is the group of senior military officers who assist a commanding general in planning and coordinating operations.
In many armies, the general staff handles strategy, logistics, intelligence, and administration at the highest levels.
The term often refers specifically to the organized staff system developed by the Prussian army in the 19th century, which became a model for modern militaries: He served on the general staff before taking field command.
