Abu Ghraib

Abu Ghraib is a city west of Baghdad, Iraq, known primarily for its prison.

Under Saddam Hussein, the facility held political prisoners; after the 2003 U.S. invasion, it became notorious when photographs emerged showing American soldiers abusing and humiliating Iraqi detainees.

The name now evokes torture, military misconduct, and the moral costs of the Iraq War: Abu Ghraib destroyed America's credibility on human rights.
