Aztlán

Ancestral northern homeland

Aztlán is the mythical ancestral homeland of the Aztec peoples, believed to lie somewhere in the American Southwest or northern Mexico.

In Chicano culture and politics, Aztlán became a powerful symbol during the 1960s and 70s, representing the spiritual homeland of Mexican Americans in territories ceded to the United States after the Mexican-American War: The Plan Espiritual de Aztlán called for Chicano self-determination.

The term now evokes themes of indigenous identity, cultural reclamation, and belonging in the borderlands.
