Zapatista
Mexican indigenous rebel
Zapatista refers to a member or supporter of a revolutionary movement in Mexico.
Originally, Zapatistas followed Emiliano Zapata during the Mexican Revolution of the 1910s, fighting for agrarian reform and indigenous rights.
The term revived in 1994 when the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) launched an uprising in Chiapas against the Mexican government: The Zapatistas seized several towns on New Year's Day.
The modern movement combines indigenous autonomy, anti-globalization politics, and grassroots democracy.
