C-terminus

Chain's acidic end

The C-terminus is the end of a protein or polypeptide chain that terminates in a free carboxyl group (–COOH).

Proteins are synthesized from the N-terminus to the C-terminus, and the two ends often have different functional properties.

Also called the carboxy terminus or carboxyl terminus: The signal sequence is located at the C-terminus of the protein.
