carboxyl

Acid's functional group

Carboxyl is a chemical group consisting of a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom and single-bonded to a hydroxyl group (–COOH).

It's the defining feature of carboxylic acids, including amino acids and fatty acids.

The carboxyl group can release a hydrogen ion, making compounds that contain it acidic: acetic acid has one carboxyl group.
