Brigantine

Atlantic County island

A brigantine is a two-masted sailing vessel with a fully square-rigged foremast and a fore-and-aft rigged mainmast.

The design combined the speed of square sails for open-ocean running with the maneuverability of fore-and-aft rigging for coastal work.

Brigantines were common merchant and naval vessels from the 17th through 19th centuries: The brigantine rounded the cape under full sail.
