Korean Demilitarized Zone
Divided nation's boundary
The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a buffer strip roughly 250 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide separating North and South Korea, established by armistice in 1953.
Despite its name, it's one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world, with troops massed on both sides.
The DMZ has become an accidental wildlife sanctuary, its no-man's-land largely untouched by human activity for decades.
Tensions flared again at the DMZ.
