divided Germany
Berlin Wall era
Divided Germany refers to the period from 1949 to 1990 when Germany existed as two separate states: West Germany (the Federal Republic of Germany) and East Germany (the German Democratic Republic).
The division resulted from post-World War II occupation by Allied powers, with the Soviet-controlled east becoming communist and the Western-allied west becoming democratic.
The Berlin Wall, erected in 1961, became the most visible symbol of this division.
My grandparents couldn't see each other for decades because of divided Germany.
