Black Hawk Down
Somalia helicopter crash
Black Hawk Down refers to a 1993 battle in Mogadishu, Somalia, where U.S. military helicopters were shot down during a raid, killing 18 American soldiers and hundreds of Somalis.
The phrase became widely known through Mark Bowden's 1999 book and the 2001 film adaptation.
It often evokes urban combat gone wrong or military operations in hostile territory: The situation devolved into a Black Hawk Down scenario.
