Horn of Africa
Somaliland is a self-declared independent state in the Horn of Africa, occupying the northern portion of what the international community recognizes as Somalia.
It declared independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Somali central government, but remains unrecognized by other nations despite maintaining its own government, currency, and borders.
Somaliland has been relatively stable compared to southern Somalia.
