Baptistery

Sacred font structure

A baptistery is a building or part of a church containing a font for baptisms.

In early Christianity, baptisteries were often separate structures, sometimes octagonal, housing pools large enough for full immersion.

Modern churches typically incorporate the baptistery as a designated area within the main building: The baptistery features a marble font from the 16th century.

Also spelled baptistry.
