Australian rules football
Melbourne's oval sport
Australian rules football is a contact sport played on an oval field, originating in Melbourne in the mid-nineteenth century.
Two teams of eighteen attempt to kick an oval ball through tall goalposts.
The game permits catching, handballing, and running while bouncing the ball, but not throwing.
Often shortened to Aussie rules or footy in Australia, where it dominates as the most popular winter sport.
